Our mission at Summit Veterinary Care has always been to provide pet families with exceptional care rooted in compassion. With over two years of service and hundreds of five-star reviews, we’re proud to continue offering fear-free, community-focused veterinary support to Bristow and beyond.
Keeping pets healthy through preventative care is one of our top priorities. One of the most important vaccines we administer is FVRCP, a core vaccine that protects cats from several serious and highly contagious diseases.
What is FVRCP?
FVRCP is a combination vaccine that protects cats against three potentially life-threatening illnesses:
- Feline Viral Rhinotracheitis (FVR): Caused by feline herpesvirus, it affects the respiratory system and can cause sneezing, nasal discharge, and eye problems.
- Calicivirus (C): Another viral respiratory infection that can cause oral ulcers, sneezing, and pneumonia in severe cases.
- Panleukopenia (P): Also called feline distemper, this virus attacks the gastrointestinal tract and immune system, often resulting in severe vomiting, diarrhea, dehydration, and sometimes death.
Because these viruses are highly contagious and can spread rapidly among cats, vaccination is the most effective way to protect them.
Vaccination Schedule
- Kittens: Begin FVRCP series at 6–8 weeks of age, with boosters every 3–4 weeks until at least 16 weeks old.
- Adult cats: Cats with an unknown or incomplete vaccine history should receive a series of two doses, 3–4 weeks apart.
- Booster doses: After completing the initial series, FVRCP boosters are typically given every 1–3 years depending on your cat’s lifestyle and risk factors.
Your veterinarian will tailor the schedule based on your cat’s age, health, and exposure risk.
Why FVRCP is Essential
- Protects against life-threatening diseases: Panleukopenia in particular can be fatal, especially in kittens.
- Prevents outbreaks: Vaccinated cats reduce the spread of these viruses in multicat households, shelters, and boarding facilities.
- Supports overall wellness: FVRCP vaccination is part of routine wellness care, giving veterinarians a chance to monitor your cat’s health.
