Dr. Susan Kirk

Veterinarian

Dr. Kirk was raised in Northern Virginia and has practiced here since her graduation from the Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine in 2008—go Hokies! Dr. Kirk’s path to vet med began while growing up with her family pets, Maggie, a border collie mix, and Bootsie, a persian mix. They were her constant companions and provided emotional comfort during her formative years. She not only connected with the dogs and cats in her life, but also spent time around horses as an avid hunter-jumper rider well into her teens. She feels fortunate to have had this experience, as riding and caring for horses broadened her appreciation of animals and strengthened her desire to always be near them.

Dr. Kirk enjoys preventative care visits, as well as more complex internal medicine cases. She has a special fondness for senior pets, and nothing makes her smile more than a gray-salted muzzle. She has achieved elite Fear Free® certification and advocates for every patient through gentle, low-stress handling and a focus on pain management. She aims to make the veterinary care experience pleasant for both her patients and their pet parents.

Dr. Kirk holds many core values that show up in her professional life, the deepest of which is compassion. She believes we are all here out of desire to alleviate the suffering of our pets and to guide their families in providing the best care possible. She aims to interact with her patients’ families with honesty, respect, and caring. She knows that veterinary care can be challenging to navigate and believes that each family has individual emotional and financial needs.

She sees it as her job to help educate her clients about different medical approaches in order to find the one that best suits the needs of their pet and family. She believes curiosity and a desire for life-long learning are needed to provide the most modern and highest standard of care possible for her patients—the same that she would practice on her own pets. Dr. Kirk feels a sense of gratitude for and interconnectedness with her patients and their families. She feels fortunate to play the role she does in our community.

Dr. Kirk loves activities that help exercise her mind and heart. She and her husband Ken can be found walking their rescue hounds, Rocky and Maggie, hiking in national parks, or traveling abroad- their most recent trip was to Greece. She also enjoys traveling with her sister, Kristin, to tropical oceans for open water swim vacations. So that she can exercise her ‘right-brain’, Dr. Kirk fills her life with music as she sings and performs with her community vocal ensemble and teaches herself guitar. She is also a huge box turtle advocate and never hesitates to slam on the breaks or give one of these little guys a nudge across the road to help them get to where they are going.
