As a growing veterinary practice in Bristow, Summit Veterinary Care is proud to offer a blend of modern medical expertise and genuine hometown warmth. Our dedication to fear-free care guides everything we do, helping pets stay healthy while minimizing stress.

Keeping pets healthy is our top priority. While many pet owners are familiar with vaccines like DA2PP and Rabies, another important, sometimes overlooked vaccine is Leptospirosis. This bacterial infection can cause serious illness in dogs — and it’s zoonotic, meaning it can also infect humans.

What is Leptospirosis?

Leptospirosis is caused by Leptospira bacteria, which dogs can pick up from:

  • Contaminated water (ponds, lakes, puddles, or standing water)
  • Soil or grass contaminated with urine from infected wildlife (like raccoons, skunks, or rodents)

Once infected, dogs can develop symptoms ranging from mild lethargy to severe illness affecting the liver, kidneys, and other organs. Without treatment, leptospirosis can be life-threatening.

Symptoms to Watch For

  • Fever or shivering
  • Loss of appetite
  • Vomiting or diarrhea
  • Increased thirst or urination
  • Jaundice (yellowing of the eyes or gums)
  • Lethargy or depression

Because symptoms can resemble other illnesses, diagnosis requires veterinary testing. Early vaccination and prompt medical attention are key to prevention.

Leptospirosis Vaccination

  • Who should get it: All dogs should get the Leptospirosis vaccine – it is now considered a core vaccination. Dogs in rural, suburban, or high-rainfall areas are at higher risk.
  • Schedule: Puppies receive a two-dose series, 2–4 weeks apart. Adult dogs receive a single dose if previously unvaccinated, with annual boosters recommended for ongoing protection.

Why Vaccination Matters

  1. Protects your dog: Leptospirosis can progress rapidly to kidney or liver failure. Vaccination is the best defense.
  2. Protects your family: Humans can contract leptospirosis from infected dogs or contaminated water. Vaccinated dogs reduce this risk.
  3. Supports community health: Vaccinated dogs are less likely to spread bacteria to other animals or the environment.

At Summit Veterinary Care

We work with every client to create a personalized vaccination plan. Leptospirosis is not a “one-size-fits-all” vaccine — it’s given based on your dog’s lifestyle, exposure risk, and local disease prevalence.

Keeping your dog safe from leptospirosis is part of our broader mission: elevating pet care while supporting our community. Protect your dog, protect your family, and enjoy peace of mind knowing your pet has the best preventive care available.
