Summit Veterinary Care was built on the foundation of compassion, comfort, and community. Whether you’re visiting us for a wellness exam or urgent care, our Fear Free Certified team strives to make every moment as positive and supportive as possible.

Preventive care is at the heart of keeping dogs healthy and happy. One of the most important vaccines we administer is DAPP, a core vaccine that protects dogs from several highly contagious and potentially deadly diseases.

What is DAPP?

DAPP is a combination vaccine that protects against four serious canine diseases:

  • Distemper (D): A viral disease that affects a dog’s respiratory, gastrointestinal, and nervous systems. It can be fatal, especially in puppies.
  • Adenovirus-2 (A): Protects against canine infectious hepatitis and respiratory infections.
  • Parvovirus (P): A highly contagious virus causing severe vomiting, diarrhea, and dehydration — often fatal without prompt treatment.
  • Parainfluenza (P): A respiratory virus often contributing to kennel cough.

Because these viruses are highly contagious and can be life-threatening, vaccination is the most effective way to protect your dog.

Vaccination Schedule

  • Puppies: Begin DAPP series at 6–8 weeks of age, with boosters every 3–4 weeks until at least 16 weeks old.
  • Adult dogs: Dogs with unknown or incomplete vaccine history should receive a series of two doses, 3–4 weeks apart.
  • Booster doses: After completing the puppy series, DAPP boosters are typically given every 1–3 years depending on your dog’s risk factors and vaccine type.

Your veterinarian will create a schedule tailored to your dog’s age, lifestyle, and exposure risk.

Why DAPP is Essential

  1. Protects against life-threatening diseases: Distemper, parvovirus, and adenovirus can all cause severe illness or death.
  2. Prevents outbreaks in communities and kennels: Vaccinated dogs help reduce the spread of these viruses.
  3. Supports overall wellness: DAPP is often combined with regular wellness exams, helping your vet monitor your dog’s health.

At Summit Veterinary Care

We prioritize safe, effective vaccination protocols for every dog that comes through our doors. DAPP is considered a core vaccine for all dogs — puppies and adults alike. By staying up to date, you not only protect your dog but also help keep the broader canine community safe.

Tip for pet owners: Ask your veterinarian about your dog’s vaccine history and make sure your dog is current on DAPP. Prevention is always better than treatment when it comes to these serious diseases.
