At Summit Veterinary Care, we know that the “wrestling match” at home and the car ride to the clinic are often the hardest parts of a vet visit. We want to share a few tips on ways to help set your cat up for success before you even leave the house. By creating a sense of security at home, you can completely transform your cat’s journey.

Tip 1: The Carrier

Use a sturdy, hard-sided carrier large enough for your cat to stand up and turn around in. We recommend a two-door model with a removable top so your cat can stay in their “safe spot” during the exam.

To help your cat feel at home, make the carrier a permanent part of your décor. Start with the top off, using a non-slip mat and a familiar blanket. Feed treats or meals inside to create a positive association. Once your cat is lounging happily, you can slowly transition to adding the top and the door.

Tip 2: Preparing for Travel

Spray the carrier with Feliway 30 minutes before loading. Pack a “comfort kit” with favorite brushes, toys, and high-value treats to maintain a familiar environment. Use a towel as a visual shield over the carrier to minimize scary sights during the walk to the car.

Before bringing your cat outside, start the car early to ensure the temperature is comfortable and play soothing music to provide a grounding effect.

Skip the handle when carrying your kitty! Support the carrier from the bottom with both hands and hold it close to your body. This prevents the “pendulum swing” that can cause motion sickness or increased anxiety.

Tip 3: The Summit Veterinary Care Difference

Once you arrive, our goal is to keep that sense of security going. Our clinic features a Fear Free Certified Team specifically trained in low-stress handling to ensure your cat feels safe and respected.

Our dedicated cat-only exam rooms feature pheromone-infused towels for “hiding forts,” delicious snacks to keep the experience positive, and safe areas for your cat to explore.

Tip 4: Extra Support

If your cat is particularly fearful or prone to car sickness, talk to our team about pre-visit medications. We offer safe options for anxiety support to help your cat stay calm before you even leave the house.

We can also provide anti-nausea support to prevent motion sickness, such as drooling or vomiting, during the ride.

By creating a safe space at home and a calm journey to the clinic, you are ensuring your cat feels secure every step of the way. We here at Summit Veterinary Care are happy to provide the support you need to keep your feline family happy and healthy for years to come!
